Episode Overview

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Meredith Jones. She is a 2008 graduate of North Carolina State University and is an emergency veterinarian in the Richmond, Virginia area. In 2016, she completed training to become a financial coach and founded the Debt-Free Vets Facebook group. She is a co-founder of the Veterinary Financial Summit, a financial conference and online community for veterinary professionals. She is passionate about empowering veterinarians with knowledge and understanding to achieve their financial goals.

TOPICS

  • Your unique career path, why did you decide as a veterinarian to pursue training to become a financial coach and host a summit?
  • The Veterinary Financial Summit. (The who, what, why, when, and how to attend.)

5 Questions Segment

Q1. We know that the most successful and happy people have a morning routine, what do you do each morning or evening that sets your day up for success? I make my bed every morning, one cup of coffee, and try to start each day helping someone else. Then I look at my planner and determine the three things that I want to accomplish today and get started.

Q2. What's your definition of Success? For me success is doing work that is meaningful and having relationships that are meaningful. When a colleague says they’ve learned something from me, that’s a huge complement and a measure of success. We also need our own internal measure of success because we don’t always hear about our impact on other people.

Q3. What's your definition of Happiness? I find that I’m the happiest when I have a sense of purpose and when I have something exciting to look forward to.

Q4. What do you know now that you wish you would have known 10 years ago? I didn’t know that there would be more to my career than seeing patients and clients and maybe owning a practice someday.

Q5. What do you think is the biggest issue facing busy professionals today? Our biggest challenge is just getting it all done, setting priorities, and also taking care of ourselves in the process.
