Beyond The Stethoscope

Dec 23, 2019

Favorite quotes of the episode: “I work hard when I’m at work and I use my downtime to recharge hard.”

Dr. Dixon shares the power of a positive mindset and how she maintains her well-being while paying down over $200k in student loan debt, “The difference between exhaustion and burnout is really just my thoughts about it at the end of the shift. I can look around and literally see these lives that I saved and the lives that I touched, and I don’t feel burned out.”

“I was very resentful of having this student loan debt hanging over my head for the next 20 years, and needed to change my mindset from it’s unreasonable to pay more than the minimum towards my debt to realizing this debt is making me uncomfortable and causing me anxiety so why don’t I just take control of it and get rid of it.”

“It’s not unreasonable to invest in things that matter to you and paying off my student loan debt matters to me.”

Episode Overview

I kicked off 2019 with a promise to discuss big issues, big ideas and provide real-world actionable solutions that we can all implement in our daily lives as busy professionals.

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Erin Dixon. She is a 2017 graduate of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is currently working at an Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Colorado Springs. Prior to emergency medicine, she worked at two mixed animal practices and still maintains the desire to help all creatures - whether they have fur, scales, or feathers.

Prior to earning her veterinary credentials, Dr. Dixon served as an officer in the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in Astoria, Oregon and New Haven, Connecticut.

When not at work, Dr. Dixon can be found hiking all over Colorado with her two dogs, Huckleberry and Kit. She also has two cats named Peek-a-boo and Hamish who don't hike but enjoy helping her solve crossword puzzles.

5 Questions Segment

Q1. We know that the most successful and happy people have a morning routine, what do you do each morning or evening that sets your day up for success? I don’t have a routine. I do walk the dogs every day, we aim for about 5 miles a day.

Q2. What's your definition of Success? I no longer think it’s about being the best or getting things right all the time. I think a person is successful if they can find meaning and accomplishment in the task before them, even if it doesn’t turn out the way they hoped.

Q3. What's your definition of Happiness? A sense of empowerment to change my current circumstances and having goals to work towards.

When I felt unhappy, I felt stuck and I was waiting for my circumstances to change so that I could change and I could be happy.

Q4. What do you know now that you wish you would have known 10 years ago? I wish I had a better grasp of personal finance 10 years ago.

Q5. What do you think is the biggest issue facing busy professionals today?  Time Scarcity and changing my mindset to I have time to do what’s important.
