Beyond The Stethoscope

Favorite quotes of the episode:

“Coaching was driving measurable outcomes, not only for patients but also helping clinicians.”

“The average interruption time for clinicians is 11 seconds.  It’s been studied 7 times and every time it’s studied, we interrupt [patients] quicker. Only 10% of the time we do a teach-back to ensure patient understanding… and miss empathic opportunities about 90% of the time.”

“…and I realized at that moment, that medicine is an extraordinary, purposeful instrument that occasionally, diagnoses, treats, and cures disease.”

“The knowing to doing gap is a chasm, and effective organizations bridge the gap.”

“You can’t manage complex systems with complexity, they have to self-organize around simple principles that are easy to advocate for.”

“To be a champion, you have to take action to make the things around you better.”

Episode Overview

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Stephen Beeson to talk about the importance of having a purpose-driven career. As a successful family medicine physician, medical group leader, and physician coach, Dr. Stephen Beeson’s career has pioneered an approach to both the patient and clinician experience with demonstrated transformative results. Dr. Beeson is the author of two national best-selling books, has helped improve physician performance in patient satisfaction from the sixth percentile to above the ninetieth percentile nationally, founded the Clinician Experience Project in 2013, and currently leads the development of clinician-designed curriculum within the Project.
